Wait for it.

Waiting a while after capturing images can sometimes yield great results. I had taken a photo of the dangling legs and did not take it to post production. I then saw a similar idea to mine and there it is, printed on canvas at least 30 inches wide. All the girls

Danisha and Christopher are a wonderful couple. I am putting these up early to show how wonderful she looked on the day. They got married in Flint and although pushed for time we did go out on the UofM campus for some photos.

Sweet success.

Sweet table success!

When I am talking with a bride I will often part with a bit of my own personal experience to assist with their day being all they planned. Usually at the time of our conversation there appears to be a mountain of information out there. The wedding industry is fraught with people offering advice.  Many of these lead to deep holes getting dug and some not so sound information.

In parting with my pearls I will keep to areas that I have fair knowledge in.  Remember that free advice is exactly that and should be treated and acted on accordingly. So why offer it, well if someone is able to glean some assistance it worked to make their day better, a bit like the man throwing starfish back in to the ocean,

  • A good Master of Ceremonies, DJ or Band master could make the difference in your bar bill. Keep your guests entertained  and well need I say anymore.
  • If your wedding cake is to be part of the desert, cut it early, no caterer wants to have a long wait between dinner and desert waiting for the cake to be cut.
  • If I had a dime for the groans I hear during post ceremony family shots, this can and does go fairly quickly if all are ready, nothing worse than having to wait on a family member, good time to remind them is at the rehearsal dinner.

River copy

Found this quote by Jim Rohn while editing my fall images, seemed to fit, anyhow liked the quote.

What a change.

Interesting times in the USA.

My story starts with one of my first trips to this country, about ten years ago.  I was driving from Dallas to Miami, I grew tired of the highway, so decided to take side roads. Amazing what you see as you drive by people’s yards. Well it was in one of these yards I happened to notice a helicopter for sale on the roadside. This impression has stuck with me as I drive by still noticing some weird and wonderful advertising, promotions and sales going on.

Then a couple of days ago I drove past this sign. I could not help thinking how much  I hoped that this country will get back to helicopters for sale sooner rather than later.Sign

Promo piece.

Flowersguys

I was going to put a small promo piece up at one of our local florists.

What could I do that was a bit different that fit into the environment and showed my work. This is what I came up with, any coments before delivery most welcome,

Equine Photography

HorseDragon3

How difficult could it be to make a photograph of a horse, that majestic of four legged creatures, do the animal justice? Surely given the subject, not too difficult right, wrong! Armed with a lot of memory and a level of confidence that was supposed to have this creature doing exactly as I planned.

I arrived on location, props in hand, I was informed of the attention span of the subject being as I recall that of a three year old or was it a three month old, regardless it was not a period befitting the majestic beast that I would have guessed. Then it started, I ran through my arsenal of noise making props in next to no time. You may ask why the noise, in the somewhat demanding area of equestrian photo a shot that unless very specific, that is guarenteed the delete key is a photo with the ears back. Although acceptable for horse and rider, the horse is listening I am told, it is not desirable for portraits.

One uses these props to get their attention, and it is all about attention span, I would never have believed it had I not experienced it but the horse grows bored with each tool at an alarming rate. Well lucky for me I had a fairly large arsenal of noise makers.

In time one begins to get a sense of what works, only to find out afterwards there are a miriad of things that are not very sought after once the owner is viewing your proofs. Very quickly a mountain of pixels comes down to a select few. It was a wonderful experience none the less..
Now as I move out into the world of manes and leather I am warned my last subject was very tolerant by normal standards. Oh! Oh!, what am I setting myself up for I ask. Honestly how much harder can it be? Keep tuned to find out as I head off to my next farm call to challenge the magnificent horse. I feel a war cry coming on. Do you think they would respond to the positive confident eye behind the camera.
Stay tuned I will let you know.

Reflection

Groomflowers

My wedding season is winding down, I am beginning my usual period of reflection. Questions like could I have done this or that better, a question every photographer should be asking him or herself. More importantly did I do my best? Again another question that each needs to ask and more importantly answer honestly.
I subscribe to the magazine Success that has a CD insert with a host of interesting business and motivation topics, then one particular host came over the speaker and got me thinking on another level, yes you guessed it another definition of success, however this one seemed different, don’t they all. Here the speaker Dr Srikumar S . Rao said when you feel that you can fall to your knees in gratitude for the privalidge of doing what you do and get up every day with stars in your eyes to do what you do again then you are successfull. Just hold on while I get off my knees and back into the chair, tough typing on your knees, a moment now to re adjust to the letters, guessing what I am writing in star shapes is tough. Seriously I am blessed with what I do, I guess who would not be on such a beautiful day.
To answer my initial questions, for sure I could and will do better, not something previous brides want to hear, however in the world of ever changing technology and a lot of updates on information and learning, will continue to evolve and try. Did I do my best. Oh yes, I pulled out all the stops to get what I did.

Finally a shout out to all who have been involved in this wonderful journey, Thank you. To those still coming along, hold on this is one crazy roller coaster ride and we’ll have fun on it.
