Now this can not go on for too much longer. In truth it is about over. The best part of my photography year is about to begin in earnest. “Wedding season.” It is so close, my first event is in two weeks. I can not wait. So to conclude my spring training I went out to photograph my last ice skating session. Note not hockey, it was a Disney theme performance at one of our local ice rinks.
Not extremely fast paced, not that elaborate, however there was one area of the performance that had the entire audience on the edge of their seats. A group of performers came on the ice, no different from the others, however they were part of a care group for people with challenges. Although they could all skate, they went on to perform a rehearsed sequence. Sadly my photos do not do their performance justice, they did an amazing job of following the act. The entire audience came to their feet to applaud their performance.
The display was especially significant to me in that if I am asked to don a pair of skates, I’ll find any excuse not to, now couple this with making an attempt to follow, copy and perform with a group, well, lets just say I am quick to volunteer as the photographer.
In closing kudos to the group, their coaches and the performance director. You created a show that opened our eyes.

Finding subjects that make for quick thinking and rapid familiarity with my camera controls gets me ready for the couples I will be photographing. What would a sport like hockey and a wedding have in common you may ask. Rather than think of the subject I think of the event. First of as I arrive at the hockey rink I have no idea what the lighting conditions will be, is it a dark rink, what sort of backgrounds can I look forward to. Where can I position myself for the best angles. Then on come the players, now unless I need that very specific face shot I would like them to behave as if I am not there. perform their respective duties oblivious of the camera. Then as the game unfolds specific shots present themselves, when these are going to happen requires that I anticipate the shot at the same time demonstrating just the right patience. The difference between the puck in the air in the net buried and hidden. Then after having been presented with multiple game changing scenarios where no two are the same my most gratifying achievement is capturing the natural expressions of
