Now this can not go on for too much longer. In truth it is about over. The best part of my photography year is about to begin in earnest. “Wedding season.” It is so close, my first event is in two weeks. I can not wait. So to conclude my spring training I went out to photograph my last ice skating session. Note not hockey, it was a Disney theme performance at one of our local ice rinks.

Not extremely fast paced, not that elaborate, however there was one area of the performance that had the entire audience on the edge of their seats. A group of performers came on the ice, no different from the others, however they were part of a care group for people with challenges. Although they could all skate, they went on to perform a rehearsed sequence. Sadly my photos do not do their performance justice, they did an amazing job of following the act. The entire audience came to their feet to applaud their performance.

The display was especially significant to me in that if I am asked to don a pair of skates, I’ll find any excuse not to, now couple this with making an attempt to follow, copy and perform with a group, well, lets just say I am quick to volunteer as the photographer.

In closing kudos to the group, their coaches and the performance director. You created a show that opened our eyes.

Photographers campfire.

Remember when……that shot cost me………I had a blast on that shoot. As I look back on images both used and unused for commercial projects I can’t help reminiscing on the events that led to or involved their capture. So many, so different. Kind of weird to say things like wow that one took 20 rolls of film. I suppose that is why my children get this glazed look in their eyes, sort of that, Oh no here he goes again look. I suppose in many respects  my old images are the fireside stories of my photography life, and I have the pictures to prove it. So gather round my darlings, here I go again.    …..Why are the colors all funny on this strip, looks weird they say about negatives, bit different from the 1′s and 0′s they do not see on the computer.

Spring training.

Blog Spring training. As the wedding season in the north approaches, I begin a regimen of practice and prep. Finding subjects that make for quick thinking and rapid familiarity with my camera controls gets me ready for the couples I will be photographing. What would a sport like hockey and a wedding have in common you may ask. Rather than think of the subject I think of the event. First of as I arrive at the hockey rink I have no idea what the lighting conditions will be, is it a dark rink, what sort of backgrounds can I look forward to. Where can I position myself for the best angles. Then on come the players, now unless I need that very specific face shot I would like them to behave as if I am not there. perform their respective duties oblivious of the camera. Then as the game unfolds specific shots present themselves, when these are going to happen requires that I anticipate the shot at the same time demonstrating just the right patience. The difference between the puck in the air in the net buried and hidden. Then after having been presented with multiple game changing scenarios where no two are the same my most gratifying achievement is capturing the natural expressions of ecstatic joy and satisfaction of an event enjoyed by all.  So there is my explanation for using a fast paced game like hockey to get me prepared and ready for any wedding a couple can bring this season.

What will happen to those images?

I tweeted this article         Album Schmalbum However felt it deserved a little more attention.

Not to rehash the article, I have however had my own experience of the issues noted and wanted to offer my few cents worth.

Handing over a disk of images has been something I have offered for a while and have always used the justification that I am secure in my work that I have no issues with my work being taken and printed by inferior labs etc, it has allowed me to present an advertised price that seems comparable to other photographers in my area. I shoot a lot of images and pride myself in telling a story of the couples day. As a result of photographing for a studio that had a very good graphics team, I got used to photographing a lot of elements of the day that stand alone would seem rather strange, however when presented in their final album really did add to the story.

The old adage of breaking a habit is harder than creating one is true in that I still shoot these subjects for my own album design and hand them over to the couple knowing in my mind their worth, I can only wonder what they must be thinking looking at them as a stand alone photograph. Now to clear up, I do offer albums and products in my basic products, however the couple are not obliged to purchase them. So from my own experience I have never sold a bride an album after the images have been handed to her. The only time I create albums are when they are included in my package. I will hasten to add that I do use a higher end publisher whose price does present itself for a rather acute case of sticker shock. This until the client sees the finished product and knows why it is priced accordingly. Generally this is I believe common in the industry, there are less expensive albums, however as you imagine the labor and care that goes into creating the product, why not lay it out in all its glory.

So back to the article, with a few interesting statistics, one of which was in 100 brides surveyed “70% of those brides had not yet made ANY prints from the disc, nor had they made an album.”  Although I have never taken the time to survey, I am left wondering if this would be accurate among my couples. As I end off I am left rather disappointed that my work ends up on a disk at the back of a drawer. Then again who am I to say what a person is to do with a product they purchased, then knowing first hand that when the honeymoon is over life comes at you and dealing with toothpaste caps and toilet seats can very easily take priority over time to do something with those wonderful memories.

Rachael at the Mall

Rachael’s theme for her Bat Mitzvah

Rachael at the Mall.

What a fun shoot. I decided not to pose, really did ask her to just have fun and do as she would any other time she went shopping. Years of being told to look at the camera was not about to be erased in one day. Her mother stood by me so a lot of my images were in actual fact the interaction between the two of them.

Had to be very careful when in the vicinity of change areas, this too was emphasized by a number of the store staff when I made a request to photograph in their store.

We had done pretty much all we wanted to do, got a coffee at the end, did a couple of shots in the atrium when security came over and very politely informed me that one may not photograph in their Mall. Oops I said, I was not aware and stopped immediately.

A photo tip.

An interesting tip from children’s book illustrator Dick Bruna

“If you put very few things on a page, you leave lots of room for imagination.”

Now adapt that to photography and one could be on to something.

Working in the winter.

I see these beautiful winter scenes and have an urge to get out and capture them. This keeps me in practice  with my camera. As I get to what I would consider a good location and begin setting up, I am quickly reminded what an appreciation I have for winter photography performed by other photographers.

Having spent a fair amount of time working underwater I am well aware of the limited time one has to capture an image, I do liken this experience to winter photography. Preparation and setup normally very slick is almost painful. Gloves and photography, not a match. I seem to bumble through the controls. Then there is the patience aspect of capturing the scene. My plan to wait for a particular scene quickly changes to what the heck let me snap the shot and get out of here.

Trudging through the snow, well if it is not apparent already, give me a beach scene anytime. Anyhow until then I will truly appreciate winter art and keep at practicing my craft.

End of 2010 New 2011

Last wedding of 2010 was a great event. New years eve wedding. The groom said he will never forget his anniversary.

It was a fantastic year. I photographed  weddings of a number of different ethnicities, these keep me on my toes. Get on the right side of the priest and they would include me in the ceremony. his way I did not miss those must get shots. Regardless of the ethnicity no two are alike. Herein may lie one of my biggest motivators for being involved in photographing the event that and the positive vibe and beautiful people. Watching and capturing the days plans coming together is such a treat. One tip I pass on to the bride as she frets over her plans…..The only person who will notice it is not 110% is you. So do not stress the small stuff. Yes so often it is just that. I guess it is easy for me to be somewhat cynical about their concerns. True, it is quite an ordeal coming down of the stress and stimulation that all the planning creates.

You said … How much?

Boy phone You said ... How much?

While editing my weddings I will come across an image that really smiles at me. This often happens with children who are a fun subject to photograph. Getting down to their level makes them unintimidated by my presence. I like to get them before the conditioning actions of their parents kick in, you know the say cheese look that often appears the moment they look at a camera.

This young fellow gave me a few seconds as he closed the deal then broke into the cheesiest grin the deal maker could ever give.
